Description
May 21 , 7pm EST
Neckwear was an extremely important part of the mid-19th century man’s wardrobe, whether he was dressed for work or leisure. Cravats, ties, and stocks in many shapes and sizes were popular from the 1840’s to the 1860’s, as seen in photographs and other visual media from the era, but was there rhyme or reason for wearing certain kinds of neckwear? Learn the ins and outs of mid-19th century men’s neckwear through this program, using extant examples from the Merchant Tailor Museum collection and references from other collections and sources.
In this program we will cover the following:
-The main classifications of men’s neckwear: cravats, stocks, ties, and detachable collars.
-Some of the more specific variations that stem from the main neckwear classifications: metallic or steel stocks, false ties, paper collars, etc.
-How neckwear was viewed, used, tied, and worn by mid-19th C men, based on contemporary sources.
-Construction methods of different types of neckwear, based on extant examples.
