Black Jewelry with Beth Miller Hall - Part 2
Description
June 11, 2024 7pm EST
Beth Miller Hall will continue the discussion started last quarter
focusing on black jewelry that was popular and available in the
mid-19 th century. This session will look more closely at dull
surfaced black jewelry: Bog Oak, Horn, Vulcanite and Gutta
Percha. Each material will be explained in terms of what it is
manufactured from, where it was produced, what distinguishes it
from the other materials, how readily available it was and why
this information would matter in creating your impression.
The information will help you identify what the pieces of
jewelry you own are made of. It will also help you identify what
is actually being advertised when a seller says “Amazing carved
jet, vulcanite, mourning, bog oak brooch”
After each segment, there will be time for questions.
It is not necessary to have watched last quarter’s class; this
session will briefly cover the basic characteristics of mid-19 th
century jewelry before we dive into the more complicated
details.
