…with my linen valise and shawl straps…with Carolann Schmitt
Description
March 26, 2024 7pm EST
Soft traveling bags were a popular alternative to structured carpet bags and
trunks for female and male 19 th century travelers. When used in conjunction with a
set of shawl straps, a traveler would be able to carry a wardrobe of necessities for
almost any trip with minimal effort. We will look at several original examples of
linen valises as we discuss sizes, fabric, embellishments, closures, and construction
details. We’ll look at shawl straps as a method for carrying additional garments.
And we’ll learn how to pack each item so your garments arrive relatively wrinkle-
free! Brief bonus demonstration on how to pack a cage crinoline in a modern
suitcase.
A sew-along class on how to make a linen valise using period techniques
will be offered in the Second Quarter of Corsets & Cravats virtual sessions.
