Join Hilary Isacson in an exploration of her collection of fashion plates and period magazines. View illustrations and publications ranging from the late 18th Century through the 1880s and beyond. Some of the best - and most frequently copied -- are the illustrations by the Colin sisters, Heloise Colin Leloir and Anais Colin Toudouze, for La Mode Illustree and other periodicals. These engravings are a colorful window into the fashionable ideal, and not just for clothing - there's often interesting detail in the backgrounds showing furniture and interiors or outdoor activities. It's also interesting to compare what is changed or omitted when an illustration is "translated" from one publication to another.
