Tortoiseshell in 19th c Combs and Jewelry

Why was tortoiseshell so popular for 19th c decorative items and what were the properties that made it so unique?

This lecture will address how tortoiseshell was cruelly harvested and look at original hair combs, brooches and earrings made from it. Tortoiseshell was so popular that many imitations were made. The originals presented will point out the distinguishing characteristics and styles of mid 19th c tortoiseshell so you are not bamboozled, conned, deceived or led astray.

All in 45 minutes, with time for questions.
