An Extreme Curiosity: Solo Women Travelers c.1840-1870
Society is becoming increasingly mobile in the mid-nineteenth century. Improved roads, railroads, and steamships make travel more available and affordable. Immigrants and emigrants seek new homes, more land, and new opportunities. Travel for personal experience and personal enlightenment is becoming more common. Women traveling alone or accompanied by other women is still unusual but is increasingly accepted.
This presentation focuses on some of the remarkable women who traveled across this country and around the world alone – without escorts, through unexplored territory, often at great personal risk. Their reasons were varied, their accounts are fascinating. We’ll look at some of the women, how they traveled, where they went, how they paid for their trips, and the dangers they encountered. We’ll discuss what they wore, what they carried, and how they packed. We’ll hear their opinions of the places they visited and the people they met and why they thought travel was such an important and valuable experience.
Grab your papers and your bags, join us on this journey, and consider how you can incorporate the role of a solo female traveler into your impression and/or event(s).
