Basque-ing in Beauty - in person - October 18-19 2025
Description
Basque Bodice Workshop with Carolann Schmitt at Timely Tresses in Oxford, NC. October 18-19, 2025
Basque-ing in Beauty - Bodices that extend below the waistline – basques,
peplums, sacques - were popular throughout the mid-19th century. Each style has a
distinctly different shape and cut which helps define the garment. Each was made
from a variety of fabrics from elegant to utilitarian depending on the intended use
and when and where it was worn. All were worn over appropriate undergarments
and require careful fitting to be flattering.
This hands-on class will begin with an exploration of the details of each garment,
when and where they were worn, appropriate fabrics, and suggestions on which
versions are appropriate for your wardrobe.
Participants will begin by learning how to alter a basic darted bodice to create their
preferred style. You will make a muslin that will be fine-tuned to fit your figure.
The muslin, or a paper copy of the muslin, will be used to create your bodice.
Depending on how fast you sew, you should have time to complete the body of the
basque in the class. If you wish, you can make the sleeves and skirt, create the
basque body in the class, insert the sleeves, and finish with a completed garment.
Participants must have a pattern or muslin for a darted bodice with a 3-piece back
that fits your body. We will have time to adjust the fit of your bodice in the fabric;
we will not have time to do an extensive fitting of your muslin. Your corset and
crinoline will be required for proper fitting.
Students will receive a copy of a detailed notebook on basque bodices.
A complete list of necessary materials, notions, and sewing supplies will be sent
upon registration.
Limited to 12 attendees.
