Making Lace: Lace Makers and Technology with Amber Kendall Tuesday May 26, 2026 7pm EST
Description
Tuesday May 26, 2026 7:00 to 8:00pm
During the 17th and 18th centuries, lace was a luxury item and lace production was largely a “cottage industry” that employed thousands of women across Europe in their own homes. Revolutions in taste and technology imperiled the livelihood of the lacemaker, but opened new avenues for fashion in the 19th century. Join us as we explore primary sources and extant pieces to reveal the evolution of lace in fashion and economy, from the perspective of both the lacemaker and the consumer.
Amber Kendall has been interested in historical fashion for as long as she can remember. She follows her heart when choosing new costume projects, dabbling in many centuries over the years. Whenever a project requires a new craft she jumps in to give it a try, which is how she found herself in an introductory bobbin lace class during the pandemic. Lacing has become one of her primary hobbies, and she has devoted many hours researching historical designs and methods. She is currently a member of the North Carolina Regional Lacers and the International Organization of Lace.
